Sustainability

Here at Nora de Mariaffi, we pride ourselves with being a sustainable and ethical brand with our made-to-order and second-hand business model. With the global epidemic of fast fashion waste and unethical production methods, more consumers are becoming increasingly aware and conscious of their consumption and where they buy their products. With this in mind, it is very important for us to be fully transparent about all aspects of our business, from sourcing, production and shipping.

materials

Our commitment to sustainability starts with thoughtfully chosen fabrics that are gentle on the planet and your skin. We source our materials in two main ways: for new fabrics, we prioritize Canadian-made, eco-certified options in natural fibers; we also source deadstock fabric and thrifted texiles to reduce industry waste. At this time, 90% of all fabric is sourced locally in small batches - eliminating waste and future emissions.

Our deadstock and thrifted texiles are typically available in limited quantities, adding a unique, one-of-a-kind quality to each piece. We also source deadstock laces, trims, ribbons, zipopers, and buttons giving new life to these materials and helping reduce industry waste.

Each piece we create is designed to become a timeless staple in your wardrobe, crafted with care for you and the environment.

production

Sustainability is at the heart of how we make things. At Nora de Mariaffi, everything is made by one person (Nora herself) in her studio in downtown St. John's.

Our made-to-order and small batch model means we only make what’s needed, so we avoid overproduction and keep waste to a minimum. Any fabric scraps we may accumulate are saved to create small projects, accessories, or to stuff 3D items —nothing goes to waste here! As we grow with the slow fashion movement, we’re always looking for new ways to keep things sustainable and mindful.

.To help minimize our carbon footprint, we offer a local pickup option. Our hang tags and shopping bags are made from recycled paper, shipping boxes are recycled, and our eco-mailers are 100% compostable. Our stickers are eco-friendly too, so you can recycle or dispose of everything with minimal waste after unboxing.
